Tanjiro Kamado is the main protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the manga and anime series created by Koyoharu Gotouge that became a worldwide cultural phenomenon. A kind-hearted boy who becomes a demon slayer after his family is massacred by the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji, Tanjiro's journey is driven by his determination to save his sister Nezuko, who was turned into a demon during the attack. The series has sold over 150 million manga copies, and its anime adaptation by Ufotable became the highest-grossing anime film in Japanese history.
Born into a charcoal-selling family in the mountains during Japan's Taisho era (1912-1926), Tanjiro was the eldest of six siblings. His peaceful life was shattered when Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon, killed his entire family except for his sister Nezuko, whom he turned into a demon. Tanjiro's exceptional sense of smell — so powerful he can detect emotions and track demons — led him to discover his sister alive but transformed. Carrying Nezuko in a wooden box on his back, he set out to find a way to turn her human again.
Tanjiro trains under Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Water Hashira, and masters Water Breathing, one of the fundamental breathing techniques used by demon slayers. He later unlocks Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God), which his father performed as a traditional dance and which is actually Sun Breathing — the original and most powerful breathing technique, created by the legendary swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Tanjiro's ability to use Sun Breathing makes him central to the fight against Muzan.
Alongside his companions Zenitsu Agatsuma (Thunder Breathing) and Inosuke Hashibira (Beast Breathing), Tanjiro faces the Twelve Kizuki, Muzan's most powerful demons. He defeats several Upper and Lower Ranked demons, including Rui, Daki, Gyutaro, and ultimately contributes to the defeat of Muzan himself in the Infinity Castle and Sunrise Countdown arcs. During the final battle, Tanjiro manifests the Demon Slayer Mark, the Transparent World, and the Bright Red Nichirin Sword — all abilities of the strongest slayers in history.
Demon Slayer's cultural impact was extraordinary, particularly in Japan. The anime film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) became the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history, surpassing Spirited Away, earning over $504 million worldwide. Tanjiro's compassion — even toward the demons he kills — sets him apart from typical action protagonists and resonated with audiences globally. The series concluded in 2020 after 205 chapters, but its anime adaptation by studio Ufotable continued through 2025.
