Alex Caruso is an American professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. Standing 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 186 pounds, Caruso has built a reputation as one of the league's most tenacious perimeter defenders despite going undrafted in 2016. He is a two-time NBA champion, earning rings with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and the Thunder in 2025.
Born on February 28, 1994, in College Station, Texas, Caruso grew up in a basketball family. His father Mike played at Creighton University and later served as Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M. Alex attended A&M Consolidated High School before playing four seasons at Texas A&M from 2012 to 2016, where he became the program's all-time leader in assists with 649 and steals with 276.
After going undrafted, Caruso signed with the Oklahoma City Blue in the G-League before the Lakers offered him the franchise's first-ever two-way contract in July 2017. He became a fan favorite in Los Angeles, earning nicknames like The Carushow and The Bald Eagle for his surprising athleticism that contrasted with his everyman appearance. His championship moment came in the 2020 NBA Bubble alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million deal with the Chicago Bulls in August 2021 and quickly established himself as an elite defender. He earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors in 2022-23 and All-Defensive Second Team in 2023-24, while also winning the NBA Hustle Award. His best statistical season came in 2023-24, averaging 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
In June 2024, the Bulls traded Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Josh Giddey, reuniting him with the organization whose G-League affiliate first gave him a chance. He became a key bench contributor on the defending champions after OKC won the 2025 NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers. In December 2024, the Thunder rewarded his impact with a four-year, $81 million extension through 2028-29.
