Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is an American professional football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. At just 30 years old, Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVP awards, and two regular-season MVP awards, placing him on a trajectory to become the greatest quarterback in NFL history. His ability to make seemingly impossible throws from any arm angle has earned him a reputation as the most talented passer the league has ever seen.
Born on September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas, Mahomes grew up around professional sports. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was a journeyman MLB pitcher who played 11 seasons in the major leagues. Patrick excelled in three sports at Whitehouse High School — football, basketball, and baseball — before committing to Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech, he passed for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns in his final season, leading the nation's most prolific passing attack.
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. After sitting behind Alex Smith for one season, Mahomes took over as starter in 2018 and immediately produced one of the greatest seasons in NFL history, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns to win the NFL MVP award at age 23. He led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LIV victory in February 2020, becoming the youngest quarterback to win both MVP and a Super Bowl.
Mahomes followed with additional Super Bowl victories after the 2022 and 2023 seasons, winning Super Bowl LVII and LVIII. His three championships before age 30 match the total of Joe Montana and place him alongside Tom Brady in the conversation for greatest quarterback of all time. In Super Bowl LVIII, he led a comeback against the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.
Off the field, Mahomes has become one of the most marketable athletes in the world. He signed a 10-year, $450 million contract extension in 2020, the largest in sports history at the time. He is a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals (MLB), the Kansas City Current (NWSL), and Sporting Kansas City (MLS), making him a unique multi-sport franchise investor in a single city.
