Tyler Lawrence France is a versatile first baseman and utility infielder currently playing for the San Diego Padres. Standing 5'10" and weighing 215 pounds, France defies the modern power-hitter mold with elite bat-to-ball skills and line-drive contact. A 2022 American League All-Star and 2025 Gold Glove winner, he has quietly built one of the more improbable careers in recent MLB history after being drafted 1,017th overall in 2015.
France grew up in Downey, California, and attended South Hills High School in West Covina before playing college baseball at San Diego State University. Under legendary coach Tony Gwynn, he earned Freshman All-American honors in 2013 and set a Mountain West Conference Tournament record with 16 hits. The Padres selected him in the 34th round of the 2015 draft, and he made his MLB debut on April 26, 2019.
In August 2020, France was traded to the Seattle Mariners in a blockbuster deal centered around catcher Austin Nola. He quickly became a cornerstone of Seattle's lineup, hitting .291 with 18 home runs and 73 RBI in his breakout 2021 campaign. His best offensive season came in 2022 when he slugged 20 home runs and earned an All-Star selection as an injury replacement for Mike Trout.
France became infamous for getting hit by pitches at a historic rate. He led MLB with 34 HBP in 2023 and holds the Mariners franchise record for career hit-by-pitches, surpassing Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez. A wrist bone bruise in 2023 and a heel hairline fracture in 2024, both caused by HBP, disrupted his performance and led to a DFA by Seattle in July 2024.
After stints with the Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins, France won a surprise Gold Glove at first base in 2025 while splitting time between the Twins and Toronto Blue Jays. In 2026, he returned to the Padres organization on a minor-league deal, completing a full-circle journey back to the franchise that originally drafted him over a decade earlier.
